LED Efficiency Award

What is the “LED Efficiency Award?”

This medallion is popping up in windows of businesses and homes around Cedar Falls, Iowa. Displaying the medallion indicates the location has purposefully converted its lighting to LED everywhere it is practical to do so.

Proactively changing our inefficient incandescent and fluorescent bulbs to LED bulbs provides an easy way for our community to significantly reduce electricity consumption for lighting without considerable expense, as LED bulbs typically save businesses and homes more money in the first year of use than the money required to purchase them. The goal of displaying the medallion is to show neighbors, customers, and passersby that you are energy conscious—in other words, that you care about our planet. If you notice this in a friend’s window or at a business you enjoy, please give them credit for taking steps toward a brighter future!

Why is LED lighting so important?

LED lighting does wonders for your wallet and our planet. LED bulbs use less energy and last longer than other light bulbs. As shown in the table, throughout the lifespan of an LED bulb, you will pay way less on energy and new bulbs that you would with an incandescent or fluorescent bulb. LED bulbs decrease the use of fossil fuels and the amount of harmful waste from light bulbs.

How do I convert?

How can I get my own medallion?

Businesses: If you have taken the steps to switch to LED lighting, email cedarfalls@ledbc.org and we set up a time to confirm your building has converted and give you that shiny medallion, all for free. The goal is to switch all bulbs that are accessible and practical.

Residences: If you have switched your bulbs to LED, simply input your address and then print your medallion at the link below as we do not visit homes. We trust that you will only display the medallion if you have done your best to convert all the bulbs that are practical to switch out.

Why are we giving out this award?

This idea was conceived by Cedar Falls High School seniors Jake Hulstein and Grant Redfern to recognize people and businesses with 100% LED lighting in their homes or buildings. Working with LED Brighter Communities, these students decided that a recognition program like this could go a long way in helping their community convert to LED lighting as a whole.
